European champions Spain begin their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign on Monday when they face tournament debutants Cape Verde in Group H. Luis de la Fuente's side is among the favorites to lift the trophy in North America, but their opening opponents have already proven they are capable of upsetting established football nations.
For Cape Verde, simply reaching the World Cup is a historic achievement. The Blue Sharks have exceeded expectations throughout qualifying and now have the opportunity to test themselves against one of the strongest teams in international football.
Spain arrive in excellent form and with one of the deepest squads in the tournament, although Luis de la Fuente has been carefully managing several key players following late-season injuries.
The biggest talking point surrounds Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams. Both attackers have recovered from hamstring problems and returned to full training, but the Spain coach has confirmed they are unlikely to start, with both expected to feature from the bench if needed. Víctor Muñoz has also recovered but is not expected to be risked from the opening whistle.
That means Mikel Oyarzabal, Ferran Torres, and Álex Baena are expected to lead the attack, while Rodri, Pedri, and Fabián Ruiz should control midfield.
Unai Simón; Pedro Porro, Pau Cubarsí, Aymeric Laporte, Marc Cucurella; Rodri, Pedri, Fabián Ruiz; Ferran Torres, Mikel Oyarzabal, Álex Baena.
Cape Verde head into the biggest match in their football history with a fully fit squad and plenty of confidence after an outstanding qualification campaign that included finishing ahead of Cameroon.
Coach Bubista has stressed that his side is coming to compete rather than simply enjoy the occasion. Veteran captain Ryan Mendes remains the team's inspirational leader, while striker Dailon Livramento will be the main attacking threat. Villarreal defender Logan Costa is expected to marshal the back line.
Vozinha; Moreira, Logan Costa, Pico, Paulo; Semedo, Pina; Ryan Mendes, Monteiro, Cabral; Dailon Livramento.
Spain will dominate possession from the opening whistle.
De la Fuente's side thrives on quick passing, patient build-up play and relentless pressing after losing possession. Rodri will dictate the tempo, while Pedri's creativity between the lines should create plenty of opportunities for Oyarzabal and Ferran Torres.
Cape Verde, meanwhile, is expected to defend in a compact low block before looking to counter through the pace and experience of Ryan Mendes and Dailon Livramento.
The longer Cape Verde keeps the match level, the more confidence they will gain. However, Spain's technical quality, squad depth and ability to introduce game-changing substitutes like Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams make La Roja overwhelming favourites.
Spain possess far too much quality, experience and depth for this opening fixture. While Cape Verde should be well-organized and highly motivated, containing Spain for 90 minutes is an enormous challenge.
Expect La Roja to control possession, create numerous chances and eventually wear down the World Cup newcomers.
